The Roots

A centuries old tradition

Just like with our other cultural symbols, tequila finds its roots in the pre-Culumbian world. Before the Spaniards arrived, the agave juice -used in ritual and healing practices, as a symbol of fertility- was cooked and fermented to create a beverage called mexcalli (in nahuatl, mezcalli means cooked pine). Tradition has it that the Lord of fire made mezcalli as a gift for the goddess Mayahuel.

In the 16th Century, The Spaniards contributed with the distillation technique, transforming mezcalli into mezcal wine. This industry grew until the 19th Century when tequila´s stage of maturity began, telling itself apart from other distilled agave products, given that it is only produced with one of the more than 100 existing agave species: The Agave Tequilana Weber, blue variety.

When tequila entered its modern stage in the 20th century, state-of-the-art technology was brought in to perfect production and reach the virtues of flavor that symbolizes the most intimate part of Mexico, offering the world the magic of our history.

In 1974 the Secretary of Industry and Commerce, resolved to protect the Designation of Origin Tequila (DOT), by establishing a Territory of Designation of Origin (TDO).
